Colonnades at the Signet Library
From ~£75 pp
Indicative price at the time of review.
The Colonnades sits inside the Signet Library beside St Giles' Cathedral, and its neoclassical salon, with tall fluted Corinthian columns and ornate balustrades, is the main reason to come; it is also a recognised Outlander filming location, which draws fans. The menu covers freshly made sandwiches, savouries and cakes from the resident pastry chef, with vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free options available on 24 hours' notice, though the venue notes it cannot guarantee the complete absence of cross-contamination. Indicative pricing starts from around £75 per person, with a glass of Champagne available as an upgrade. Versus the Balmoral at number one, you trade the live harp and larger loose-leaf tea range for an even grander architectural setting; it scores a shade lower overall mainly on value, as the highest base price on our list, and on access, since it serves only Wednesday to Sunday and reserves some Saturdays for weddings. Bookings open up to three months ahead, so secure a slot as early as you can.
