What we collect

• Hosting & request data — like any website, our hosting provider receives standard technical details with each request (such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested) in order to deliver the site and keep it secure.
• Analytics data (with your consent) — we use Google Analytics 4 to collect usage data: pages visited and the path you take through the site, approximate region, device and browser type, the site that referred you, and which outbound links you follow. This only uses cookies/identifiers after you accept analytics on our cookie banner; before that, Google Analytics runs in consent mode and sends only limited, cookieless signals. Google processes this data on our behalf.
• Affiliate links — some outbound links (including links to Amazon) are affiliate links. When you follow one and make a purchase on the retailer's own site, that retailer may set its own cookies there to attribute the sale. These are ordinary outbound links: WATTB does not embed Amazon (or other retailer) advertising or tracking technology in our pages, and we do not set affiliate cookies on this site. To understand which recommendations readers find useful, we record through our analytics (above) which affiliate link was clicked — the guide, the product/pick and its rank position — but no personal data or account identifiers, and only use cookies for this after you accept analytics.
• Advertising — we don't run third-party ad networks or advertising trackers on this site.
• Maps — some guides include a map of the places they cover. It loads only when you scroll to it, and its map tiles come from OpenStreetMap, which receives your IP address in order to serve the tiles. No cookies are set for the map. See OpenStreetMap's own privacy policy for how they handle that request.
• Email — if you email us, we use your email address and message to read and reply to it.
• Newsletter — if you sign up, we collect your email address and pass it to the service we use to manage sign-ups, so we can send you the newsletter.
• Suggestions & business enquiries — if you use our suggest-an-edit or business forms, we collect what you send (your message, the page it's about and, if you give it, your email address or business details) and pass it to the service we use to receive submissions, so we can review it and reply. We do not write the contents of your message or your email address to our routine application logs.
• “Was this helpful?” votes — if you answer it, we record only the page and your yes/no answer, with the time it was received, and pass that to our feedback destination (our processor). It is anonymous: no name, email, account, IP address or device details are sent with it. Your IP address is used briefly in server memory to limit abuse and is not stored or passed on. Your browser remembers that you've rated a page so we don't ask again. We don't publish vote counts.

Legal basis

We rely on your consent for analytics (which you can give or withdraw via the cookie banner), and on our legitimate interest in operating and securing the site and responding to you for everything else. We do not sell your personal data.
