The Cardigan Arms is the best traditional-pub roast in Leeds. This Grade II-listed Victorian corner pub was saved from closure and lovingly restored by Kirkstall Brewery using historic colour schemes and finishes, and it won CAMRA's national Joe Goodwin Award for the best restored street-corner local. That accolade is for restoration and design rather than the food, which is where it sits just behind Ox Club — but the roast itself is a genuine draw, with options including mustard and pepper topside beef, turkey with bacon, a goats'-cheese Wellington and a ruby beetroot nut roast, so non-meat eaters are properly catered for. The official site confirms a Sample Sunday Menu served until 5pm. Indicative pricing is around £17 per person, a lower entry point than the restaurant picks. Choose it over Ox Club when you specifically want atmosphere, heritage and real ale at a keener price, or you're closer to Kirkstall than the city centre.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Genuine vegetarian roasts (goats'-cheese Wellington, beetroot nut roast)
  • Lower indicative price than the restaurant picks

  • Sunday service stops at 5pm — no late sittings
