The Marble Arch is a Manchester classic: a beautiful Victorian pub with a sloping mosaic floor, glazed tilework and a serious reputation among beer lovers thanks to its links with Marble Brewery. The Sunday roast is built on well-sourced beef with generous trimmings. It is the pick if your ideal Sunday is an unhurried afternoon with an excellent pint of cask ale alongside the plate. There is usually a vegetarian roast option too, so check when booking. At around £16 it offers strong value, and unlike The Britons Protection below, the roast is a dependable weekly fixture rather than an occasional one, which is why it ranks higher. It sits behind the central heritage of Sam's mainly because it is a beer-first pub a short walk from the core tram stops; choose it when a top cask pint alongside the plate is the point.

Insider tip · Go early. Once the day's roasts are gone the kitchen stops serving them, and they go faster than you would think.
