A portable speaker is the classic teenage-bedroom gift, and the Flip 7 is the current pick of the mid-size class. It is IP68 rated, meaning fully waterproof and dustproof — a step up from the previous Flip 6 — so it shrugs off the park, the beach and the odd splash in the bathroom. Sound is impressively full for something this small, with clear vocals and enough bass to fill a room, and around 14 hours of battery (extendable via Playtime Boost) covers a long day out. The Flip 7 adds Bluetooth 5.4 and Auracast, so he can link it wirelessly to other compatible speakers for a bigger setup at a party, plus a new push-button loop for clipping it to a bag. The only real gripe is the RRP, which sits high — this is a speaker worth buying in a sale, where it becomes excellent value.
