The Wine Breather (from Audo Copenhagen, formerly Menu) is a decanter built around speed and looks. Wine flows through a breather in the neck as you invert the bottle into the carafe, which the maker says aerates a whole bottle in roughly two to three minutes; the flip-and-pour design also lets you send it back into the bottle to serve. Made from hand-blown glass with stainless-steel and silicon parts, it lists from around £50 in the UK. It sits fifth because its benefit is narrower than the others': fast aeration mainly helps young, tannic reds, and delicate or aged wines can be harmed by aggressive contact with air. But for someone who drinks big, youthful reds and appreciates Scandinavian design, it's a more characterful gift than a plain decanter - and easier to pour and store than a wide traditional one.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Fast aeration for young, tannic reds in a couple of minutes
  • Two-way pour and a striking design that doubles as a table piece
  • Easier to pour from and store than a wide traditional decanter

Cons

  • Aeration mainly benefits young big reds, not delicate or aged wines
  • Hand-blown glass needs careful hand-washing
