Nespresso (by De'Longhi/Krups)Nespresso Vertuo Pop
Our verdict · The easiest route to genuinely good crema-topped coffee for most UK kitchens, at a price that undercuts the rest of the Vertuo line.
Buy it if

Skip it if
You want cheap pods or milky drinks from a single capsule, since Vertuo pods are Nespresso-only and it has no milk system.

The Vertuo Pop is the machine we would point most people to first. Unlike Nespresso's Original line it brews mug-sized coffee as well as short espresso, and its Centrifusion system reads a barcode on each pod to set the right water volume and spin speed automatically, so there is nothing to set. At an indicative £99 it is the cheapest way into the Vertuo range and one of the smallest machines in the line-up. The trade-off versus the pricier Vertuo Plus below is a much smaller 0.56L tank and no 414ml Alto size (it caps at the 230ml mug), plus a brew temperature that independent reviewers describe as slightly cooler, which can marginally soften extraction. The bigger ongoing consideration is cost: Vertuo pods are Nespresso-only, with only limited third-party options, and run roughly 45p to 65p a cup, so heavy drinkers pay more over time than they would on the Original system.
The good & the bad
Pros
- Brews mug-sized coffee and espresso, which Nespresso's Original line cannot
- Cheapest entry into the Vertuo range with a small footprint for tight worktops
- One-button Centrifusion brewing with no strength or volume settings to fiddle with
Cons
- Vertuo pods are Nespresso-only at roughly 45-65p a cup, with only limited third-party options
- Small 0.56L tank, no 414ml Alto size and, reviewers note, a slightly cooler brew than the Vertuo Plus
