Google's Nest Cam is the standout for intelligent, low-noise alerts. It processes person, animal and vehicle detection on the device itself, so notifications are relevant rather than triggered by every passing shadow, and it works beautifully inside a Google Home setup. Crucially, core alerts and a rolling window of around three hours of free event history work without any subscription. A Nest Aware plan, from roughly £8 a month, unlocks longer recording history, familiar-face recognition and package detection. It can be used indoors or outdoors and pairs neatly with Nest displays. Resolution is 1080p HDR, so it trails our 4K picks on outright detail, but for accurate, trustworthy alerts around the home it is hard to beat.
