How much should a student spend on a laptop?
£500–£800 hits the sweet spot for most students — enough for a good keyboard, all-day battery and 16GB of RAM. You can study perfectly well on a £400 laptop; spending over £1,000 mainly buys premium build and longer battery.
How much RAM do students need?
16GB is the target if you can afford it — it keeps lots of browser tabs and documents smooth and future-proofs the laptop for a full degree. 8GB is workable for lighter use but starts to feel tight over time.
MacBook or Windows laptop for university?
Both are excellent. A MacBook Air wins on battery, silence and build; a Windows laptop is cheaper, offers more ports and wider software compatibility. Check whether your course requires any Windows-only software before deciding.
Is battery life or performance more important for students?
For most students, battery life. A laptop that lasts a full day untethered gets used everywhere; raw performance only matters if your course involves heavy editing, engineering or data work.
