If the tea itself matters most, Fortnum & Mason is the pick. Served in the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on the fourth floor of the Piccadilly store, it draws on the grocer's three centuries of tea expertise, with a list far deeper than any hotel can offer, from familiar breakfast blends to rare single-estate leaves. The food follows the classic tiered format of sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and preserves, and cakes, and the tea, sandwiches and scones are replenished, so nobody leaves hungry. A pianist adds to the calm, retail-adjacent mood; it feels less like a hotel occasion and more like a refined West End day out, and you can browse the food hall on the way down. At around £90 a head it is also marginally gentler on the wallet than the grand-hotel salons.
