The Cod's Scallops
~£12-18 pp
Indicative price at the time of review.
The Cod's Scallops started with a single shop in Wollaton and has grown across the East Midlands on the strength of one simple idea: run a proper fishmonger's counter and a chippy under the same roof. That means the fish is about as fresh as it gets and the menu ranges far beyond cod and haddock into hake, plaice, grilled options and a rotating specials board, plus battered scallops and other seafood for the more adventurous. It has earned National Fish & Chip Award recognition and regional titles over the years, and the seating is more casual bistro than fine dining, which actually suits families well. There's enough choice to keep fussy eaters and curious ones equally happy, and the grilled alternatives are a genuine help if you'd rather not have everyone eating fried.

- Wet-fish counter means exceptional freshness
- Unusually wide range of species and grilled alternatives
- Repeated National Fish & Chip Award recognition
Cons
- Popular sites can have a wait at peak times
- Not city-centre, so less convenient without a car
