Compressor dehumidifiers lose efficiency as temperatures fall, which is where a desiccant machine like the DD1 Classic earns its place. It uses a moisture-absorbing rotor rather than a cold coil, so it keeps working reliably in cold, unheated spaces such as garages, conservatories, caravans and utility rooms right through a British winter. Its rated extraction (around 7-8L/day) looks modest next to the big compressor numbers, but those compressors would barely function in a 5-10C room, so in the cold it out-performs them. It is noticeably lighter than a compressor unit and warms the air by a few degrees as it runs, which is welcome in a chilly room but unwanted in summer. Desiccant models use more electricity per litre extracted, so match it to the cold spaces where it has a clear advantage rather than as a whole-home workhorse.
