Our verdict · Medieval great tower on top, secret wartime tunnels below — a thousand years of England's defences in one hilltop.

Dover packs an unusually rich sweep of history into one English Heritage site. Children can climb the recreated medieval Great Tower with its brightly coloured royal interiors, let off steam in the Siege Play Area, then descend into the Secret Wartime Tunnels where sound, film and darkness bring the Dunkirk story to life. New for 2026 is 'Dover Castle Under Siege', an interactive exhibition dramatising the 1216–17 siege, which gives younger visitors another hands-on hook. A Roman lighthouse and Saxon church share the hilltop, and the Channel views are superb. It is a large, hilly and exposed site, so wear good shoes and pick a fair-weather day. Note that the Operation Dynamo section of the wartime tunnels is currently closed for essential maintenance (the Underground Hospital remains open), so check what's running before you go. English Heritage members enter free, making it outstanding value if you already have a card.
