Chester Zoo consistently ranks among the best in the UK and Europe, and its scale is the point: this is a full day of walking through expansive, well-designed habitats across a 128-acre site rather than peering into small cages. It is home to over 30,000 animals from more than 500 species. Highlights include the ambitious Islands zone, where a Lazy River boat glides past the enclosures, the elephant and rhino habitats, and the indoor Monsoon Forest, which keeps things comfortable in poor weather. Its work as a conservation charity is front and centre, which makes the day easy to justify educationally as well as for fun. Book advance online tickets to save up to 20% against gate prices, wear proper walking shoes, and note that parking is chargeable. Afternoon saver tickets are a cheaper option if you only have half a day.
