Established in 2003 and expanded in 2010, the Cairngorms sprawl across the Scottish Highlands and hold five of Scotland's six highest mountains. This is wild, big-sky country: the sub-Arctic plateau supports ptarmigan, dotterel and snow bunting, while the ancient Caledonian pinewoods shelter capercaillie, red squirrels, ospreys and Britain's only free-ranging reindeer herd. Aviemore is the buzzing hub, with the funicular railway up Cairn Gorm, mountain biking, the Rothiemurchus estate and Loch Morlich's beach. Walkers get everything from gentle forest and loch-side trails to committing multi-day expeditions across the Lairig Ghru. It is remote, spacious and never feels crowded.
