Blacklock Soho
Our verdict · Our best all-rounder: it nails the fundamentals and, at around £24 a head, undercuts every pick below it bar the equally-priced Camberwell Arms, for the quality on the plate.

On Sundays the chops come off the menu at Blacklock and the kitchen focuses on the roast, sourcing its meat from a long-established Cornish family of butchers and farmers. You can order beef, lamb or pork on their own, but the signature move is the 'All In', a generous pile of all three carved over bone-marrow gravy — the only three-meat plate among our London picks. It arrives with a puffed Yorkshire pudding, duck-fat roast potatoes and seasonal veg, and the gravy is topped up freely. Reviews describe the room as loud and unpretentious, and a family-style white chocolate cheesecake has been on the menu since the group's early days. At around £24 a head it lands roughly £11 below the beef-led Hawksmoor that follows, which is why we recommend it most often: it gets the fundamentals right at the keenest price here.

- Reviews describe a loud, busy room — not the place for a quiet lunch

Insider tip · If you cannot get a Sunday slot in Soho, the Blacklock branches in the City, Shoreditch and Covent Garden run the same roast and are sometimes easier to book.
