Tucked down Bruton Place, The Guinea Grill is one of London's most traditional roasts, of the kind many newer places set out to echo. An inn has stood on this site since the 15th century, and the grill itself has been serving since 1952. The kitchen roasts and carves grass-fed, dry-aged beef from Godfrey's, its long-standing butcher, and serves it pink with a light Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, horseradish and gravy. The low-beamed dining room sits behind the bar. At around £36 it is a touch pricier than the more polished Hawksmoor above and the room is small, but for a traditional pub roast in a genuinely historic setting it is the pick — the trade-off is heritage character in exchange for limited tables and Mayfair prices.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Grass-fed, dry-aged beef from Godfrey's, a long-standing butcher
  • Genuinely historic Mayfair setting — an inn since the 15th century, a grill since 1952
  • Traditional Yorkshire puddings, horseradish and gravy

Cons

  • Small dining room means tables are limited and go quickly
  • At around £36 pp, Mayfair pricing well above the typical pub roast

Insider tip · Book the back dining room rather than a bar table, and go early; the best cuts of beef can sell out by mid-afternoon.
