If your kitchen leans on Smeg's retro aesthetic, the BCC02 lets you carry the theme through to your coffee corner without dropping to a novelty product. Behind the curved, colourful casing is a competent automatic: stainless steel conical burrs, a digital touch display and a menu of programmable one-touch drinks covering espresso through to cappuccino via an automatic milk function. It's clearly priced for the design as much as the performance — you can get sharper espresso for the money elsewhere, and enthusiasts will find the shot a step behind the Jura — but the coffee is perfectly enjoyable, the milk drinks are easy, and the build feels reassuringly solid. Buy it because you love how it looks and want a machine that backs that up, not because you're chasing the best possible cup at this price.
