The current Paperwhite is the e-reader most people should buy. The 7-inch 300ppi E Ink display is crisp and evenly lit, with an adjustable warm light for night reading, and it is noticeably quicker to turn pages and wake than previous generations. IPX8 waterproofing means it shrugs off the bath or the beach, and battery life stretches to weeks of normal use. The trade-off is Amazon's walled garden: you are buying into the Kindle store and formats, and the standard model shows lock-screen adverts unless you pay to remove them or choose the Signature Edition, which adds wireless charging, auto-adjusting light and 32GB of storage.

  • Adverts on the standard model unless you pay to remove them
