If you want a classic German Christmas market, Nuremberg is a leading example. Around 170 wooden stalls draped in red-and-white cloth pack the Hauptmarkt beneath the Frauenkirche, earning the market its nickname, the 'Little Town from Wood and Cloth'. A strict charter keeps out mass-produced plastic, so the crafts, Nuremberg Lebkuchen (gingerbread), grilled Rostbratwurst and the giant Feuerzangenbowle punch lean traditional rather than staged. The compact old town is walkable, and Bamberg and Regensburg make excellent rail day trips. It runs from 27 November to 24 December 2026, open daily 10:00–21:00.
