Running since 1570, Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik has earned the city its 'Capital of Christmas' billing. Around 300 wooden chalets thread through the Grande Île beneath the great red sandstone cathedral, centred on the towering tree at Place Kléber. What lifts Strasbourg for a city break is context: the half-timbered Petite France quarter, a strong regional food-and-drink scene, and a rail network that opens up easy Alsatian day trips. It draws around two million visitors, so it is busy, but the market is spread widely enough to breathe. In 2026 it opens on the fourth Friday of November, 27 November, and runs to late December; the exact 2026 closing date is to be confirmed on the official Strasbourg tourism site. It is typically open daily 11:30am to 9pm (from 2pm on opening day, closing early on Christmas Eve).
