Founded in 2002, Lasan helped define Birmingham's contemporary Indian scene and, in 2009, under then-head chef Aktar Islam (now of Opheem), became the first Indian restaurant in the UK named Best Local Restaurant on Gordon Ramsay's The F Word. Islam has since moved on to his own two-star flagship, but Lasan endures in its Jewellery Quarter home, still combining bold creativity with rooted tradition: menus lean on fresh produce and layered spicing, with plating that nods to fine dining without the tasting-menu price. It remains a strong all-rounder for vegetarians in particular, and the handsome St Paul's Square setting makes it a dependable choice for a smart lunch or dinner that feels special without the ceremony of the two-star rooms above it on this list.
