Opheem opened in 2018, won its first Michelin star in 2019 and a second in February 2024 — making it the first restaurant in Birmingham to hold two stars and one of only two two-Michelin-star Indian restaurants in the UK, alongside London's Gymkhana. Brummie chef Aktar Islam builds each dish around the deep history of the Indian subcontinent's cooking, then reinterprets it with contemporary technique: think the Lucknow-inspired treatment of a humble carrot, or delicately spiced, immaculately balanced courses served from an open kitchen. You start with snacks and a drink in the bar and sitting room before moving through to the dining room. It is not cheap and it is not a curry-house night out — it is a considered, several-hour experience. Vegetarian, pescatarian and halal versions of the menu are available on request, and booking well ahead is essential.
