Created by Ajay and Shivani Kenth in a former bakery, Zindiya trades the white tablecloths for a colourful, buzzy dining room in Moseley Village. The format is small plates served as they are ready, tapas-style rather than a formal starter-main structure: kati rolls, pav bhaji, lamb chops and other street-food staples, washed down with craft beer or Indian-inspired cocktails. It is fresh, well-priced and genuinely fun, with plenty for vegetarians and vegans, and the value is a big part of the appeal. It is the most casual entry on this list and won't satisfy anyone hunting for refined fine dining, but for an easygoing, sociable dinner in one of Birmingham's nicest suburbs it is exactly the right call — and the reopened Camp Hill line now puts a station in the village.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Fresh, flavour-packed street food at low prices
  • Fun small-plate format and lively atmosphere
  • Good vegetarian, vegan and drinks options

Cons

  • Casual cooking that some find inconsistent
  • In Moseley rather than the city centre, though the Camp Hill line now serves the village
