Christmas at Kew winds for around 2.5 km through the Royal Botanic Gardens at Richmond (the exact route length varies year to year), and it is among the most consistently impressive light trails in the UK. Expect tunnels of light, mirrored installations, fire gardens, a laser show over the lake and a spectacular finale around the iconic Palm House. Allow roughly 75 to 90 minutes to walk it at a relaxed pace. It is the busiest and priciest trail on our list, but the production values, the setting and the sheer scale justify the ticket. Mulled wine, food stalls and a small funfair keep everyone happy, and the wide, level, well-lit paths make it one of the easier big trails to do with a buggy or wheelchair.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Standout scale and production quality, including a lakeside laser show and Palm House finale
  • Wide, level, well-lit paths that suit buggies and less mobile visitors
  • Excellent food, drink and funfair options along the route

Cons

  • The most expensive trail here, with peak weekend slots selling out early
  • Very busy at popular times, so pinch points can slow the walk
