Longleat Festival of Light

Our verdict · Not a bulb trail but a walk among enormous handcrafted lanterns, and utterly unlike anything else on this list.

Longleat's festive centrepiece swaps the usual laser canopies for enormous, intricately handcrafted silk-and-steel lanterns, each built to a themed story and lit from within. The result is genuinely distinctive: towering figures, animals and scenes that dwarf visitors and reward slow exploration. As the estate's flagship winter event it draws big crowds, and because it sits within the wider Longleat safari park and stately home, an evening ticket can feel like far better value if you make a full day of it and arrive in the afternoon. It is the priciest per-head option here, but facilities are excellent, there are indoor attractions if the weather turns, and the walk is manageable for families, making it a strong choice if you want something beyond a conventional light trail.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Unique giant lantern sculptures you will not see anywhere else in the UK
  • Part of a larger estate, so it pairs well with a full day out
  • Strong facilities, food and indoor options if the weather turns

Cons

  • Highest indicative per-head price on our list
  • Remote Wiltshire location makes a car close to essential

Insider tip · Go on a clear, cold night; the lanterns' colours pop against a dark sky, and arriving late afternoon lets you enjoy the wider estate before the lights take over.
