Pennyhill Park's spa is the headline act: a sprawling wing of indoor and outdoor pools that turns Mediterranean in summer and into a steamy thermal haven in winter, backed by a herbal sauna, ice igloo and a long list of massage and beauty treatments. Couples can drift from the pools to a treatment together and back out to the spa's own restaurant without changing out of their robes. The bedrooms and the wider estate, spread across 123 acres of Surrey parkland, live up to the spa, and the food across the hotel is a cut above what you find at most spa hotels. It is expensive and it can be busy at weekends, but nothing else on this list matches the sheer breadth of what's on offer. The spa welcomes guests aged 16 and over, so it stays grown-up without being strictly adults-only.
