Seaham Hall pairs a historic clifftop house, famously where Lord Byron married in 1815, with the separate, Asian-inspired Serenity Spa, connected by an underground walkway so you can pad over in a robe. The spa runs a pool and thermal suite alongside a wide treatment menu, and the mood throughout is calm and grown-up. Where it really earns its place is romance: the suites are generous and several coastal lodges come with their own hot tubs, which makes it a natural choice for a private couples' escape or a special occasion. The North East coast is quieter and less obvious than the Cotswolds or Cornwall, and that seclusion is part of the appeal. It doesn't have the scale of Pennyhill Park or the thermal pedigree of Bath, but for a two-person coastal bolt-hole it's hard to beat.
The good & the bad
Pros
- Award-winning Asian-inspired spa with pool and thermal suite, reached in your robe via an underground walkway
- Coastal lodges and suites, several with private hot tubs, ideal for a romantic stay
- Quiet, less-touristed stretch of coast for real seclusion
Cons
- Smaller thermal offering than the biggest resort spas
- County Durham coast is a longer haul for southern and western couples
