The Karu 2 Pro is the oven we recommend to most people because it refuses to make you choose. Fire it with wood or charcoal for genuine smoke and char, or bolt on the (separately sold) gas burner for a fast, controllable midweek bake. The 17in-wide chamber comfortably swallows a 16in pizza with room to turn, and the new ClearView glass door with airwash keeps soot at bay so you can actually watch the bake. It hits around 500°C and cooks a Neapolitan in roughly 60 seconds, while the Ooni Connect hub feeds live floor temperatures to your phone over Bluetooth. It ranks first for value and versatility even though the pricier Gozney Dome below edges it on outright performance, because it does nearly everything for around a third of the outlay (around £699 against the Gen 2 Dome's ~£2,000). It is a step up in price from the 12in ovens, and the gas burner is an extra to factor in; choose the Dome instead if all-day thermal mass matters more than portability or price.

The good & the bad

Pros

  • Genuine multi-fuel flexibility: wood, charcoal or optional gas
  • Large 16in cooking floor with a low, even ceiling for good spring
  • Glass door and Bluetooth temperature hub make bakes easy to judge

Cons

  • Gas burner is sold separately, adding to the real-world cost
  • Wood and charcoal firing needs more attention than a pure gas oven
